Are you looking for a stable job abroad where experience and technical knowledge are valued? An excavator is not a toy, but a serious machine that can dig quickly, deeply, and accurately. This profession is in high demand in Germany, especially in housing construction, road construction, and infrastructure. If you have the skills and want official employment, here’s what you need to know.
Working on an excavator is not just about turning levers, but actually managing the construction process. In Germany, this profession is considered important and responsible, because the start of the entire project often depends on the work of the excavator operator. Without a high-quality foundation, there will be no proper foundation.
They are not looking for just anyone here, but people who understand how the equipment works, can perform tasks accurately without unnecessary movements, and keep the rhythm on the site. Often, you will not only have to dig, but also level the ground, help with dismantling, and clean up the site after work. It all depends on the type of project — private construction, commercial space, or urban infrastructure.
Experience is required, because without it, you simply won’t be allowed to sit in the cab. It is desirable to have at least a couple of seasons under your belt to be able to navigate basic tasks: soil preparation, leveling, loading, and transporting. You must have a license with the appropriate category (for example, for tracked or wheeled excavators), and European-style documents or willingness to undergo on-site verification are often required.
It is important to be able to handle the equipment calmly. No one is rushing you — precision is key. If you have experience in related fields, such as working as a driver or mechanic, this will definitely be a plus.
Language skills are not critical. Many companies already employ Ukrainians and have a translator or coordinator. However, it is better to understand basic commands (such as “stop,” “higher,” “deeper”).
In Germany, working as an excavator operator is official employment through a contract.
They usually offer a stable schedule — 8–10 hours a day, five days a week. There are sometimes shifts on Saturdays if a site needs to be closed earlier. They often provide uniforms and transportation, and the equipment is usually new or in good condition.
Salary depends on experience, type of excavator, and complexity of the site. On average, it ranges from €17 to €22 per hour. There are additional payments for night shifts, urgent call-outs, or work in difficult areas. Accommodation is either provided or partially compensated. Insurance is also arranged, and assistance is provided with documents for legal residence.
